An important focus area in our environmental efforts is waste reduction and responsible waste management, including reuse and recycling.
We set targets for reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill, maintaining high recycling rates, and retiring PCB-containing equipment. To achieve these targets, TMK pursues its Waste and By-Product Management Program.
Initiatives taken under the Program helped to fully restore the land disturbed by sludge storage operations, increase the share of recycled steelmaking waste to 92%, and minimize the volume of waste sent to landfill. The Company regularly implements measures to increase waste recycling. In 2022, we reused 485.5 thousand tonnes of waste, a fivefold increase y-o-y driven by specific measures taken at Volzhsky Pipe Plant (VTZ), Pervouralsk Pipe Plant (PNTZ), and Chelyabinsk Pipe Plant (CHTPZ).
For handling waste that cannot be recycled, TMK leverages cutting-edge disposal solutions. For example, in the Volgograd Region, the Company has built and operates an advanced landfill using encapsulation technology. This technology prevents the negative impact of landfill production and consumption waste on the environment not only during the landfill’s active life but also after the facility is closed.
