TMK showcases its environmental safety and decarbonization projects

At the 3rd international forum Ecology of Metals and Mining, and Oil Producing Facilities 2021, TMK presented projects and programs to ensure the environmental safety of its enterprises and decarbonize production.

The forum focused mostly on the decarbonization of metals and mining companies, as well as oil companies. In their presentations, Boris Pyankov, TMK’s Technical Director, and Elena Mikhailova, the Company’s Chief Environmental Engineer, noted that carbon footprint reduction is a priority area within TMK’s ESG strategy. The carbon agenda is embedded across the Company’s risk management system and business processes.

Over the past 15 years, TMK has carried out a major modernization program to upgrade its electric arc furnace capacity and commissioned advanced gas treatment systems with an efficiency of up to 99%. These measures have enabled TMK to halve its emissions. In addition, TMK has in place a GHG reduction program to cut its CO2 emissions by 8% by end-2023. Investments in the program activities will total RUB 2.9 billion.

“The strategic goal of TMK’s environmental policy is to build a sustainable, responsible and competitive business ensuring environmental safety amid rapidly developing production operations. The Company pursues this goal consistently and systematically by implementing large-scale projects and programs. Specifically, TMK is currently developing its GHG reduction strategy to 2030. All these efforts strengthen TMK’s position as one of the world’s leading pipe producers standing out for its modern and responsible approach to enhancing the environmental performance of its operations,” said Boris Pyankov.

Within the strategy session focused on the economic and environmental aspects of water management, experts from Chelyabinsk and Pervouralsk pipe plants (Chelpipe and PNTZ, both part of TMK) presented their successful AQA project to upgrade the plants’ water use systems and mitigate the impact on water resources.

The annual international forum Ecology of Metals and Mining, and Oil Producing Facilities 2021 is an industry platform for leaders of metals and mining companies, investors, as well as executive authorities, leading experts and analysts. Over 250 delegates from five countries participated in the event in 2021.
