TMK hosts 16th International Congress of Steelmakers at Pervouralsk Pipe Plant

The Association of Steelmakers and TMK hosted the 16th International Congress of Steelmakers (ISCON-2021). The event was held on May 24-28 in Yekaterinburg and included a visit to TMK’s Pervouralsk Pipe Plant.

The Scientific Council for Metallurgy and Metal Science at the Chemistry and Materials Science Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and CNIITMASH, a research center of the Rosatom state nuclear corporation, helped to organize the congress. The event attracted over 300 delegates from Russia, Germany, Italy and other countries, representing metals companies, research and design institutions and the academic community.

The main goals of the congress were to share best practices, boost international cooperation between metal producers and consumers, showcase advances in steelmaking science and technology, and identify new approaches to the professional development of industry talent.

Attendees discussed the metallurgical industry’s development. The event included roundtable discussions and break-out sessions: Steelmaking and Special Electrometallurgy, Energy Efficiency, Resource Conservation, Environmental Protection and Recycling, Industry 4.0 – Creating a Digital Enterprise and others. In particular, TMK representatives and their colleagues from the industry discussed technological solutions to increase output of billets and the use ferroalloys for steelmaking.

The event also included a visit to the main production sites of the Pervouralsk Pipe Plant, including the plant’s electric arc furnace (EAF) shop, which is one of the most advanced steelmaking facilities in Russia and globally, producing pipe billet out of 82 steel grades and their modifications for TMK’s plants and its Russian and international customers.

“Steelmaking technologies are rapidly evolving, with steelmakers facing new challenges. Today, a particular focus is given to the environmental aspect of manufacturing, operational efficiency, and innovative steels and alloys for high-tech industries. It is important that market participants and their partners compare notes and share best practices so that they can address these challenges together. I am confident that the congress, which TMK had the privilege to host, resulted in new initiatives and projects and provide a strong impetus for further development of steelmaking and the metals industry in general,” said Igor Korytko, CEO of TMK.

TMK’s steelmaking operations are concentrated across six sites. In addition to the Pervouralsk Pipe Plant, these include the Volzhsky Pipe Plant, Seversky Pipe Plant, Taganrog Metallurgical Works (TAGMET) and Yartsevsky Metzavod in Russia as well as TMK-RESITA in Romania, fully covering the company’s demand for steel billets. The facilities boast advanced electric arc furnaces running 100% on recyclable materials – scrap metal.
