TMK shares its experience in achieving the highest quality and environmental standards

TMK’s investments along with organizational and technical measures over the last 15 years have enabled a 50% reduction of wastewater, a 30% drop in water consumption, and a 12% reduction in energy intensity across its Russian operations, according to Elena Mikhailova, TMK’s Chief Environmental Engineer, speaking at the 2nd Industrial Ecology Russian Interindustry Summit.

At the summit, Elena Mikhailova presented TMK’s Environmental Policy, pointing out that environmental stability across the Company’s footprint is one of its strategic development priorities. TMK has been successfully addressing this challenge by enabling environmentally safe production that incorporates best available technologies and advanced equipment with the lowest possible environmental impact.

Since 2006, TMK has completed more than 250 environmental projects at its facilities, investing a total of RUB 160 billion in revamps and upgrades and over RUB 19 billion in environmental protection. TMK is currently implementing a new targeted greenhouse gas reduction program with a budget of about RUB 3 billion, aiming at an 8% reduction in CO2 emissions by end-2023. TMK will continue to pursue its strategic Environmental Policy aimed above all at ensuring that TMK conducts its business in a sustainable and responsible manner that drives environmental safety in the context of fast-growing production.

“Environmental safety in the regions where we operate and resource conservation are our key priorities integral to TMK’s strategic development. We have completed a global modernization program across our production facilities and continue to prioritize environmental protection, particularly waste management. The Company has already recycled about four million tonnes of legacy waste and reduced its waste generation by 40%. The next step was the development of a targeted three-year waste and by-product management program, designed to minimize waste generation and increase recycling rates,” said Elena Mikhailova.

The summit participants also discussed the experience of Chelyabinsk Pipe Plant (Chelpipe), part of TMK Group, in implementing a closed-loop water treatment system, taking the AQA Crystal facility as an example. Galina Golubkova, Chief Environmental Engineer at Chelpipe, discussed how an advanced facility eliminates acidic discharges from industrial etching operations into water bodies.

The 2nd Industrial Ecology Russian Interindustry Summit gathered together more than 150 delegates from the energy, metals, mining, chemical, construction and machine-building industries of Russia, as well as representatives of the government and expert community. The summit agenda’s key topics included industrial waste recycling and disposal, addressing legacy environmental impacts and recent changes in environmental laws.
