Tempering

Glossary

Tempering

The final heat treatment process, during which the hardened alloy (with a metastable structure different from the equilibrium) is exposed to makeup heat below the polymorphic transition point, holding, and cooling at certain pace to achieve transition into a more balanced condition. By varying temperature-time conditions for tempering, it is possible to significantly affect the hardened steel structure, and alter its mechanical properties on a wide scale.
